Installing CO2 Tank for Phantom Hazer

Updated on

The Phantom Hazer that we use at Life.Church requires CO2 to operate. Each campus should have two CO2 tanks: one primary tank, and one backup tank. We suggest re-ordering CO2 immediately after the primary tank has been replaced so there is always a backup tank on site.

For instructions on ordering CO2, please refer to the article: Getting CO2 Refilled for the Phantom Hazer.

After ordering CO2, the old tank needs to be taken off and the new one properly installed when it arrives. This article will go over how to properly uninstall the old CO2 tank and install the tank.

In order for Airgas to leave the new, full CO2 tank, they must have easy access to the empty tank. If they cannot replace the empty tank, they will not leave the new tank.

Removing Empty CO2 Tank:

Close Off the CO2 tank:

Turn the valve knob on the top of the tank clockwise until it is securely tightened. Most tanks are labeled with a Close rotation arrow and an Open rotation arrow.

Unscrew Regulator from the Tank:

Using a wrench or crescent wrench, slowly loosen the golden connection that secures the regulator to the CO2 tank. Once loose, use your hand to unscrew the rest of the connection.

Do not lose the plastic washer on the inside of this assembly!

The absence of this washer  could potentially cause CO2 leaks, leaving you with no haze without notice.

Unstrap the CO2 Tank from the Stage Leg:

The CO2 tank should be secured with a ratchet strap to a stage leg or sturdy structure. Remove the strap so the tank can be taken to the mail room in the office for pickup.

Bring the Empty Tank to the Mail Room for Pickup and Swap.

Installing New CO2 Tank:

Secure the Tank to a Stage Leg or Structural Beam:

Use the same location the empty tank came from and secure the tank with the ratchet strap. Ensure that the output nozzle is facing away from the stage leg or beam.

If the tank was not already secured, please refer to the article "CO2 tank safety strap" for suggestions on how to properly secure the tank.

Attach the Regulator to the CO2 Tank:

Make sure that the plastic washer is inside the nut assembly, between the regulator and the CO2 tank. Hand tighten the regulator nut onto the CO2 tank nozzle and then use a wrench to screw the regulator into the CO2 tank.

Double-Check the Regulator Connection to the Hazer:

The black quick-connect hose on the regulator should be connected to the back of the hazer.

If the hose is not connected, simply push it onto the nozzle, as shown in the video below.

Open the CO2 Tank and Check the Regulator Pressure:

Turn the large black knob on top of the CO2 tank counterclockwise to open the CO2 tank output valve. Using the picture below as a reference, watch the regulator's Output gauge, which should read 4-4.5 BAR without haze pushing out, and 3.5-4 BAR with haze pushing out.

If the regulator reads lower than this, turn the black knob on the regulator counterclockwise to open the output valve until the output gauge reads correctly.

If the regulator reads higher than this, run a small amount of haze and then turn the black knob on the regulator clockwise to close the output valve until the output gauge reads correctly.

You must run haze while closing the regulator's output valve to ensure an accurate reading; this releases the pressure in the hose, allowing an accurate reading of the dropping pressure.
