Transferring IEM mixes: Scene to scene on Yamaha QL5/CL5

Updated on

Global Paste is a function on the CL/QL series that allows the user to paste select parameters from the current scene, to another scene that is already saved on the console. With a little preparation, global paste can be used to transfer IEM mixes from one scene to another.

Preparation steps

1. Turn recall safe off on all IEM mixes

The most important step in preparing for this is to ensure that recall safe is off on all IEM mixes. If recall safe is on, the mix will not be transferred from scene to scene.

2. Save an Up To Date (UTD) IEM mix scene for each consistent band

These scenes will act like a bank of IEM mixes that you can pull from in case there is a sub in the band. For example, if the Saturday drummer fills in for a Sunday, it is possible to just paste their IEM mix from the Saturday scene to the Sunday scene. But now, the Sunday IEM mix has been overwritten. The UTD IEM mix scenes are necessary to keep that Sunday IEM mix so that it can be put back to normal after the Saturday drummer is done.

Let's say I have a Saturday band, a Sunday band, and a Switch band. I will be creating an UTD Saturday IEM scene, and UTD Sunday IEM scene and an UTD Switch IEM scene.

When creating a Saturday IEM scene, store the Saturday scene a second time to an empty slot on the console, and label it "Saturday UTD IEM."

To keep these current, add storing the UTD IEM scene to your workflow at the end of each day.

Selecting and Pasting a mix

Global paste does not allow the re-assignment of mixes when pasting from scene to scene. The mix must be re-assigned on the bank scene, before pasting to another scene.

For steps on how to properly move a mix, refer to the article: Moving IEM mixes within a scene on a QL5/CL5

After working through the steps in the above article, proceed with the steps listed below.

1. Open the store/recall window by touching the Scene [000] square in the bottom right corner of the console screen.

2. Recall the scene that has the IEM mix that you would like to transfer.

For example, to transfer the Sunday drummer's IEM mix to the Saturday scene, recall the Sunday UTD IEM scene.

3. Touch "Global Paste" in the upper part of the store/recall window

4. Move to the Outputs tab by touching the tab on the bottom of the window.

5. Make sure that "With Source CH Level" is selected.

This pastes how much of each channel is being sent to this mix, which is the most important part of an IEM mix.

6. Make sure that only the mix that you want to paste is selected.

Everything that is highlighted in green is selected.

By using "Set By Sel," you can select or unselect mixes by just hitting the "Sel" button on the mix out fader bank.

7. Once the desired mix is selected, verify that no other mix or parameter is selected (green).

8. Select the destination scene for the mix on the right side of the screen.

This is a multi-select tool. "From" and "To" do not mean "paste from [Switch UTD IEM] to [Sunday]". If multiple scenes are highlighted, the IEM mix will paste to all of the highlighted scenes.

9. Touch "Paste" and confirm.
